Torch-on, or torch-down roofing is probably the most popular form of flat roofing in the UK. It involves three layers of modified bitumen felt which are melt-welded to the surface of the roof and to each other, to create an impenetrable barrier to moisture. The melting is achieved by using blow torches, hence the name.


Three layers of felt are required by UK building regulations, if the roof is above a living area. Garages and sheds can get away with two layers. Always ensure a roofer is aware of these regulations.
