Soffit is a French word. It translates as 'something fixed underneath', and they are most commonly found filling the space between wall and fascia, at the bottom edge of a roof. They are installed at an angle of 90 degrees to the wall.

Why are soffits important ? The soffits support the fascia (which support the bottom line of tiles or slates) and are essential in regulating the ventilation into the roof space. Without ventilation, the roof space becomes damp, especially in a centrally heated house. This will eventually cause the roof timbers to rot. 

Soffits also help to keep out birds, bats, squirrels and other creatures who might cause damage to your property. 

Soffits are aesthetically pleasing too. Without them, the roof tends to look unfinished. This is fine in older houses, but in a modern property, soffits are essential.
